Sea tide sound - Kaichoon

A collection of translated poems by Ueda Bin. Published by Hongo Shoin in October 1905 (Meiji 38). Contains 57 works by 29 modern European poets. Many of the poems are well-known masterpieces, such as Verlaine's "Falling Leaves," which begins with "The sigh of Eolon on an autumn day," Carl Busse's "You in the Mountains," which begins with "Your sky is far away in the mountains, people say you live in happiness," and Browning's "Spring Morning." The poets translated are diverse, including those from England, Germany, and Italy, but the translations of the works of the French symbolists, such as Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Verlaine, and Verhaeren, are particularly important as their first introduction to Japan. The translations, which incorporate emotion into familiar terms, are impressive, as they beautifully combine the translator's rich scholarship with flexible sensibility and aesthetic sense. The preface, which explains the meaning of "symbols" in poetry, is also important, and played a major role in moving the course of modern poetry. The direct influence of this work on such poets as Susukida Kyukin, Kambara Ariake, and Kitahara Hakushu cannot be overlooked, but the literary world in which this work beautifully incorporates a Western flavor into its rhythm also had an immeasurable impact on the sensibilities of modern Japanese people.

上田敏(びん)の訳詩集。1905年（明治38）10月、本郷書院刊。近代ヨーロッパの29人の詩人の、57編の作品を収める。「秋の日の／ヸオロンの／ためいきの」と始まるベルレーヌの「落葉(らくえふ)」、「山のあなたの空遠く／『幸(さいはひ)』住むと人のいふ」と歌い出されるカール・ブッセの「山のあなた」、さらにはブラウニングの「春の朝」など人口に膾炙(かいしゃ)した名編が多い。訳された詩人はイギリス、ドイツ、イタリアなど多彩な顔ぶれだが、なかでもフランスのボードレール、マラルメ、ベルレーヌ、ベルハーレンなど象徴派の作品の翻訳は、日本への最初の紹介として重要である。親しみやすい用語のなかに情感を盛り込んだ翻訳は、訳者の豊かな学識と柔軟な感性や美意識をみごとに結び合わせたもので印象深い。詩における「象徴」の意味を説く「序」も重要で、近代詩の流れを大きく動かす働きをした。薄田泣菫(すすきだきゅうきん)、蒲原有明(かんばらありあけ)、北原白秋(はくしゅう)らへの直接の影響も見逃せないが、その韻律のなかに西洋の香りをみごとに定着した文学世界が、近代日本人の感性に与えた影響も、また計り知れないものがあろう。
