Le Figaro (English spelling)

Le Figaro (English spelling)

The oldest and most representative conservative newspaper in France. A morning paper published in Paris. Founded in 1854 by Hippolyte de Villemessant (1810-1879), a great journalist of the time. Became a daily in 1866. It gained a reputation as a literary paper by employing leading writers such as Émile Zola, the Goncourt brothers, and Dumas the younger. It also defended Captain Dreyfus during the Dreyfus Affair, confronting the French Army and winning, securing its position as a leading political newspaper from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. In 1942 during World War II, the famous anti-Nazi editor Pierre Brisson (1896-1964) voluntarily suspended publication in protest of the Vichy government's censorship, but it was relaunched in August 1944, the day before the Liberation of Paris. After the war, under Chairman Brisson, the company succeeded in separating capital and management, and in 1969 the circulation reached 530,000, marking its golden age. After Brisson's death, management gradually deteriorated, and in 1975 the company was bought by right-wing newspaper magnate Robert Hersant (1920-1996). In 1977, political editor and commentator Raymond Aron (1905-1983) left the company, leading to conflicts between management and editorial, and the company entered a period of decline. In 2004 it was bought by the Dassault Group, a major French arms manufacturer. In 2010 the circulation was approximately 330,000 copies.
