A war between Poland and Soviet Russia that broke out during the turmoil following World War I and the Russian Revolution. In April 1920, Poland, which had just gained independence, invaded Soviet Russia, which was exhausted by civil war and foreign intervention, with the aim of achieving the largest territory it had before losing its independence, and captured Kiev in early May. In response, Soviet forces launched a counterattack from the north and south, reaching the Curzon Line in Poland in mid-July. Despite warnings from the Western powers and internal calls for caution from Trotsky, Radek and others, Soviet leader Lenin ordered the continuation of the advance in the hope of sparking a revolution in Poland and other Western European countries, but was defeated by the Polish army led by J. Piłsudski outside Warsaw in mid-August.
