A border city in northeastern Mexico, Tamaulipas state, separated by the Rio Grande River, and twinning with Laredo in the United States. Population 218,413 (1990). It is the main transportation route to Mexico City via the industrial city of Monterrey, and the main gateway for seasonal agricultural workers, braceros, who enter and leave the United States. Two contrasting cultural landscapes unfold along the border. In recent years, the development of consumer goods industries, such as lumber, food processing, and textiles, has been remarkable. With the development of irrigation systems, the Rio Grande basin has become a major cotton-growing region. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
