A sparsely populated salt flat in the Altiplano in southern Bolivia. It is covered with thick deposits of salts, mainly sodium chloride, which are so pure that they can be eaten as is. It can become flooded during the rainy season. Some areas are salt lakes, such as Lake Uru-Uru, Lake Popo (area approximately 1,500 km2), which receives water from Lake Titicaca, and Lake Coipasa (approximately 2,000 km2). The bottom of the salt flat is 3,653 meters above sea level. It was formed when Lake Mintim (lake surface 3,757 meters above sea level, area approximately 50,000 km2), which existed during the last glacial period, dried up.
