Born on May 5, 1859. In 1889 he joined the Nihon Shimbunsha newspaper company and was in charge of the "Hyorin" column, where he became renowned for satirizing current affairs through Chinese poetry. In 1920 he formed the Seisha company with Mori Kainan and others. In 1923 he became a professor at Daito Bunka Gakuin. In 1937 he became a member of the Academy of Arts. He passed away on March 5, 1944, at the age of 88. He was from Sendai in Mutsu. He dropped out of the Ministry of Justice Law School. His given name was Takatane and his pen name was Shibi.
