Siegfried Line (English: Siegfriedlinie) German

The Great Fortress Line built by Germany.

(1) A defensive line constructed by the German army on the Western Front during World War I. It stretched 150 kilometers from Arras through Saint-Quentin to the Aisne River. It was constructed in early 1917 and served as the base for the spring offensive in 1918, remaining in operation until October of the same year. Siegfried was the name of a legendary German hero. The Allied forces called it the Hindenburg line.

(2) A fortress built by Hitler before World War II as a counter to the French Maginot Line. It stretched 400 kilometers from Aachen to Basel. It was equipped with countless pillboxes and tank trenches, but was breached by the Allied forces' superior air force and mobile forces in late 1944 to early 1945. Hitler called it the "Westwall."
