Sergei Nikolaevich Sergeev-Tsenskii

A writer from the Russian Soviet Union. His real name was Sergeev. He was born into a family of teachers, but his father participated in the defense of Sevastopol (1854-55) during the Crimean War. He studied at a normal school and worked as a teacher, but began writing in 1901. He also participated in World War I. His early works (Tundra, 1903, Village Cemetery, 1904) tend toward decadence, but he gradually began to portray rural life in Russia more realistically, and his love for the peasants can be felt in works such as Babeev (1907) and Sorrow in the Fields (1909).

ロシア･ソ連邦の作家。本名はセルゲーエフSergeev。教師の家庭に生まれたが，父親はクリミア戦争中のセバストポリ防衛戦(1854‐55)に参加した。師範学校に学び，教師をしていたが，1901年より文筆活動に入る。第1次世界大戦にも参加。初期の作品(《ツンドラ》1903，《村の墓地》1904)にはデカダンスの傾向が強いが，しだいにロシアの農村生活をリアリスティックに描くようになり，《ババーエフ》(1907)，《野の悲しみ》(1909)では農民に対する愛情が感じられる。
