A mining city in the Dalarna region in central Sweden. Population 54,601 (2001). It is located in the hilly region called Bergslagen, which is rich in underground resources. The mining industry, represented by a mining company founded in 1280, once boasted the world's largest copper production, but now the main products are sulfur and zinc, with sulfuric acid and red paint as by-products. The city also produces paper, lumber, and automobile parts. The city is home to the 15th-century Copper Mine Church, the 17th-century Christian Church, and the Mining Museum. It is also a center for winter sports, with ski slopes and jumping platforms. [Koko Nakajima] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
