Falun - Falun (English spelling)

A mining city in the Dalarna region in central Sweden. Population 54,601 (2001). It is located in the hilly region called Bergslagen, which is rich in underground resources. The mining industry, represented by a mining company founded in 1280, once boasted the world's largest copper production, but now the main products are sulfur and zinc, with sulfuric acid and red paint as by-products. The city also produces paper, lumber, and automobile parts. The city is home to the 15th-century Copper Mine Church, the 17th-century Christian Church, and the Mining Museum. It is also a center for winter sports, with ski slopes and jumping platforms.

スウェーデン中部、ダーラナ地方の鉱業都市。人口5万4601（2001）。地下資源が豊富なベルイスラーゲンBergslagenとよばれる丘陵地帯に位置する。1280年創立の鉱山会社に代表される鉱業は、当時は銅の産出量で世界一を誇ったが、現在では硫黄(いおう)、亜鉛が主で、副産物として硫酸、赤色塗料を産出する。製紙、製材、自動車部品などの工業もある。15世紀建立の大銅山教会、17世紀のクリスチーネ教会、鉱山博物館がある。またウィンタースポーツの中心地で、ゲレンデやジャンプ台の設備がある。
