Chū shī biǎo (English spelling)

Japanese: 出師表 - すいしのひょう（英語表記）Chū shī biǎo

This is a letter that Zhuge Kongming, the chancellor of Shu in the Three Kingdoms period in China, presented to the future ruler Liu Shan when he marched out to subjugate the state of Wei in 227 (5th year of Jianxing). It was included under this title in the Wen Xuan. With Shu facing a critical moment, this is a masterpiece in which the future ruler respects wise men and offers advice to enhance the virtues of his former ruler Liu Bei. It also lists and recommends reliable people, explains the purpose of the Northern Expedition, and expresses his own loyalty. Historical records state that Zhuge Kongming presented another letter the following year, called the Later Dispatched Military Letter, but there is some disagreement as to whether this letter is genuine.

中国，三国蜀の丞相であった諸葛孔明（しよかつこうめい）が，227年(建興5)，魏国討伐に出陣するとき，後主劉禅に奉呈した上表文。《文選》にこの題をつけて収録された。蜀の危急存亡に際して，後主が賢者を尊び諫言を入れて先主劉備の遺徳を高めるよう願い，頼るべき人材の名をあげて推薦するとともに，北伐の目的を明らかにして自己の忠誠心を吐露した名文である。その翌年に《後出師表》とよばれるもう一つの表を奉呈したことを史書は伝えるが，このほうは孔明の真作かどうかについて異論もある。
