... The bitterlings of the Acheilognathinae family have local names such as Tanago (Tokyo), Bote, Botejako (Lake Biwa), Shubuta (Fukuoka Prefecture), and Senpara (Gifu Prefecture). The English name is bitterling, but the correct English name is the European bitterling Rhodeus sericeus . There is one species of this subfamily in Europe and several dozen species in Asia, with 15 species and subspecies in Japan (including one subspecies introduced from the Asian continent).
