A breed of dog. Originally native to the cold regions, it refers to dogs used for pulling sleds, guarding livestock, hunting, etc., and includes the Husky, Samoyed, and Wolfspitz. All of them are characterized by upright ears, curled tails, pointed snouts, and thick fur. In Japan, it usually refers to the white Mittelspitz and Japanese Spitz, which were bred in Germany. They stand 29 to 36 cm at the shoulder and are used as guard dogs and pet dogs.

イヌの品種。本来は寒帯地方原産で,そりを引いたり,家畜の見張り,狩猟などに用いられるものをさし,ハスキー,サモエード,ウルフスピッツなどが含まれる。いずれも立耳巻尾で吻(ふん)がとがり,被毛は厚いのが特徴。日本では普通この中のドイツで改良された白色のミッテルスピッツや日本スピッツをさす。肩高29〜36cm,番犬,愛玩犬とされる。
