Died October 12, 1654. Dutch painter. Studied under Rembrandt in Amsterdam from 1641 to 1643, and was active in Delft from 1650. Registered with the Delft Painters' Guild in 1652. Painted portraits, architectural landscapes using perspective, genre scenes, animals, etc. Apparently influenced Vermeer. His brother Berland (1624-1673) was also a painter. His representative work is The Goldfinch (1654, Mauritshuis, The Hague).

オランダの画家。 1641～43年アムステルダムでレンブラントに学び，50年以降デルフトで活動。 52年デルフトの画家組合に登録。肖像画，遠近法的な建築風景，風俗画，動物画などを描く。フェルメールにも影響を与えたらしい。弟のバーラント (1624～73) も画家。代表作『ひわ』 (54，ハーグ，マウリツハイス美術館) 。
