He threw himself into the all-India nationalist movement against Governor Curzon's Bengal Partition Bill (1906), led the radical wing of the Congress Party together with his brother Ramgopal Ghosh and Tilak, and published the newspaper Yugantar. He was arrested in 1908, and after being released the following year, he distanced himself from politics. At the age of 38, he abandoned his wife and retired to Pondicherry in southern India, where he built a monastery and taught yoga. He wrote a large number of books, including his major work, The Life Divine.
