First, the Mezquita of Cordoba (8th-10th century), a representative example of the legacy of the Umayyad Caliphate, is a huge prayer hall with a plan of 136m x 186m and 1,000 columns. Its double arch structure was inspired by the Roman aqueducts, and shows the uniqueness of Spanish-Islamic architecture. Islamic art, which prohibits idolatry, developed arabesque patterns, but the decorativeness added to the late Cordoban style was developed by the subsequent Almohad dynasty of North Africa, and its elegant crystallization can be seen in the Giralda Tower (12th century) in Seville.
