Sadao Maruyama

A modern theater actor. Born in Ehime Prefecture. After working as a bank waiter, he joined the Aoitori Opera Company and became a trainee at the Tsukiji Little Theater, which was founded in 1924 (Taisho 13). He made his stage debut in the second performance of "Wolf." He was praised as a character actor with eccentric tendencies, and was the actor with the most appearances. In 1929 (Showa 4), he formed the Shintsukiji Theater Company with Hijikata Yoshi, and played an active role as a central actor. In 1932, in order to raise money for the medical expenses of his wife, actress Hosokawa Chikako, he appeared in the Enoken troupe, which he had known for a long time, under the stage name Fukuda Ryosuke, which attracted a lot of attention. He later moved from PCL to an exclusive contract with Toho, and was active in films such as "My Wife, Like a Rose" (1935) and "Brother and Younger Sister" (1936), and was praised as the "Danjūrō ​​of modern theater." After the Shinchiji Theater Company was disbanded, he formed the Kurakuza Theater Company, and organized part of it into the Kurakuza Mobile Troop (later the Sakura Troop). He was exposed to the atomic bomb along with nine other members of the troupe while touring Hiroshima, and died on August 16, 1945.

新劇俳優。愛媛県生まれ。銀行給仕などを経て青い鳥歌劇団に入り、1924年（大正13）創立の築地(つきじ)小劇場の研究生になる。第2回公演『狼(おおかみ)』で初舞台。奇行癖のある性格俳優として評価され、出演回数のもっとも多い俳優であった。29年（昭和4）土方与志(ひじかたよし)を擁し新築地劇団を結成、中心俳優として活躍。32年妻の女優細川ちか子の療養費捻出(ねんしゅつ)のため旧知のエノケン一座に福田良介(りょうすけ)の芸名で出演、話題をよぶ。のちPCLから東宝の専属になり、『妻よ薔薇(ばら)のやうに』（1935）、『兄いもうと』（1936）などの映画でも活躍、「新劇の団十郎」と評された。新築地劇団解散後、苦楽座を結成、その一部を苦楽座移動隊（のち桜隊）に編成し、広島巡演中に隊員9名とともに被爆し、昭和20年8月16日死去した。
