1899‐1972 British biologist. Graduated from Morden College, Oxford. After serving as a lecturer at the same university and a professor at the University of London, he served as director of the British Museum. He served as a member of the Royal Guard in both world wars. He was knighted in 1954 and received the Royal Society's Darwin Medal in 1958. He conducted comparative anatomy and morphology related to homologous organs in vertebrates, as well as experimental developmental research using amphibians. He also criticized E. Haeckel's "Principles of Biogenesis" based on the phenomenon of "heterochrony," in which the order of development in individual development is reversed depending on the species, and considered the process and mechanism of evolution.
