...In August 1981, Voyager 2 approached to within 38,000 km of Saturn and collected data to solve new mysteries that had arisen from the observations of Voyager 1, then flew on to Uranus and Neptune, making its closest approach to Uranus in January 1986 and Neptune in August 1989.

Other planetary probes include the American Pioneer 5, launched in March 1960 as the first ever interplanetary space probe; Helios 1 and 2 (launched in 1974 and 1976, respectively), which West Germany, in cooperation with NASA, sent to a distance of 0.3 astronomical units from the Sun to explore the Sun; and ISEE3 (short for International Sun-Earth Explorers, launched in 1978 in cooperation with NASA) which observed the solar wind at the Lagrangian point where the gravitational forces of the Sun and Earth are balanced.
