These are short fibers less than 5 mm long that are attached to cotton seeds after the cotton plant has been harvested. When the cotton ovary breaks, soft white cotton fibers attached to the seeds appear. When the 2-3 cm cotton fibers (lint) are removed from the seeds using a cotton gin, the seeds have short fibers attached to them. These short fibers are made from the same high-purity cellulose as cotton, so they are removed using a special cotton gin and used as linters or cotton linters, as a raw material for synthetic fibers. 綿花を採取した後の綿実についている5mm以下の短繊維のこと。綿の子房が破れると白い柔らかい綿花が種子に付いて現れる。2～3cmの綿繊維(リント)を種子から綿繰機で外すと，種子には短い繊維が付いている。この短繊維は綿花と同じ高純度のセルロースからできているので，特別の綿繰機で取って，リンターまたはコットンリンターとして化学繊維の原料などに使われている。【瓜生敏之】
