These are short fibers less than 5 mm long that are attached to cotton seeds after the cotton plant has been harvested. When the cotton ovary breaks, soft white cotton fibers attached to the seeds appear. When the 2-3 cm cotton fibers (lint) are removed from the seeds using a cotton gin, the seeds have short fibers attached to them. These short fibers are made from the same high-purity cellulose as cotton, so they are removed using a special cotton gin and used as linters or cotton linters, as a raw material for synthetic fibers.
