A large saprophytic orchid with a flower stalk that reaches 1m, living symbiotically with the mycelium of Armillaria mellea (illustration). The Japanese name is derived from the likening of the stem to an arrow used by an ogre, and it is also known as Nusubito no Ashi. A member of the Orchidaceae family. There is an ellipsoidal tuber about 10cm long underground. The flower stalk reaches a height of 100cm, and is yellowish brown with 5-6 scaly leaves scattered about. In June and July, 20-40 flowers are produced at the tip, somewhat densely. The pedicel is longer than the ovary, and the flowers are yellowish brown and 7-8mm in diameter, with the sepals and petals fused together to form a tube.

花茎1mに達する大型の腐生ランで，ナラタケの菌糸と共生している（イラスト）。和名は茎を鬼の使用する矢にたとえたもので，別名ヌスビトノアシともいう。ラン科植物。地下に長さ約10cm，楕円体状の塊茎がある。花茎は高さ100cmに達し，黄褐色でまばらに5～6個の鱗片葉をつける。6～7月，先端にやや密に20～40花をつける。小花柄は子房よりも長く，花は黄褐色，直径7～8mm，萼片および花弁は癒着して筒状である。
