Another name for cationic surfactants. Unlike anionic surfactants such as soap, in which the lipophilic group becomes an anion, these become cationic, hence the name, also known as positive soap. Representative examples are tertiary alkylamine salts and quaternary alkylammonium salts. Like other surfactants, negative soaps form an interfacial adsorption layer to reduce surface tension, but they have no cleaning power and instead cause anionic substances such as fatty acids to be adsorbed to fibers, etc. In hard water, they do not precipitate even when coexisting with metal salts.
