International Organization of Consumers' Unions

...In the United States, lawyer Ralph Nader (1934-) began a corporate whistle-blowing campaign in 1964, focusing on the issue of automobile safety, and achieved great success, playing a major role in developing a new type of consumer movement worldwide. During this time, the International Organization of Consumers' Unions (IOCU, headquartered in The Hague) was established in 1960 as a federation of consumer groups from around the world, and as of 1983, 121 groups from 50 countries are members of the IOCU, which, in cooperation with the United Nations, is contributing to the promotion of consumer movements around the world. In Japan, even consumer cooperatives (co-ops) were underdeveloped until World War II, and the consumer movement was almost nonexistent. In the postwar period of poverty, the history of the consumer movement began with the establishment of co-ops and the start of petition-style movements by women's groups such as the Housewives' Association.
