Tosai's Essays

Japanese: 東斎随筆 - とうさいずいひつ

A collection of tales from the Muromachi period. Two volumes in one book. Written by Ichijo Kaneyoshi. Date of publication unknown. Published in 1693 ( Genroku 6 ). It is divided into 11 categories, such as music, plants, birds and animals, and human affairs, and mainly collects tales from the Middle Ages, but most of them are merely summaries or quotations from sources such as "Kojidan," "Jikkunsho," and "Okagami." This is the first book in Japan to be called an "essay."

室町時代の説話集。二巻一冊。一条兼良著。成立年未詳。元祿六年（一六九三）刊。音楽類、草木類、鳥獣類、人事類など一一に分類し、主に中古の説話を集めるが、「古事談」「十訓抄」「大鏡」などを典拠とし、その要約・引用にとどまるものがほとんどである。日本で随筆と称した書名の最初のもの。
