Also called hand axe, it was originally called coup-de-poing in France. It is a type of stone tool used by prehistoric humans. Both sides of the stone are chipped and processed to form a pear shape. In other words, the tip is sharp, both sides have blades, and the base is semicircular so that it can be held in the palm of the hand. It is a versatile tool for stabbing, cutting, scraping, hitting, splitting, and gripping, and is a characteristic stone tool of the Early Paleolithic period (Abbeville culture, Acheulean culture) in western Afrasia, including Europe, Africa, West Asia, and India. It is medium-sized, measuring 12 to 15 cm. Oval and triangular ones are also found. Its development from pebble tools has been made clear at sites such as Olduvai in East Africa.
