Sumiyoshi Imperial Palace - Sumiyoshi no Angu

Japanese:
Sumiyoshi Imperial Palace - Sumiyoshi no Angu

During the Nanboku-cho period, this was the temporary palace (temporary palace) of Emperor Go-Murakami and Emperor Chokei of the Southern Court. The building used for the temporary palace was called "Shoin-den" and was also known as "Suminoe-dono". The ruins of Sumiyoshi Imperial Palace are located within the grounds of Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine in Sumiyoshi 2-chome, Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka City, and are designated as a national historic site. When Ashikaga Takauji surrendered to the Southern Court in October 1351 (Kan'o 2, Shohei 6) due to the Kan'o Disturbance, an internal conflict within the Muromachi Shogunate, and a temporary unification of the Northern and Southern Courts (Shohei Unification) was established, Emperor Go-Murakami left Ano in February of the following year and used the residence of Tsumori Kunikika, the head priest of Sumiyoshi Shrine on the Southern Court's side, as his temporary palace. Tsumori Kunikika was awarded the rank of Shosanmi by the Southern Court. In leap February, Emperor Gomurakami advanced to Yawata in Yamashiro and attacked Kyoto, and the Southern Court forces occupied Kyoto by force, but in March Takauji and Yoshiakira, father and son, recaptured Kyoto, and Emperor Gomurakami returned to Ano from Yawata in May. Later, due to internal divisions within the Southern Court, Emperor Gomurakami moved to the Sumiyoshi temporary palace in September 1360 (Enbun 5, Shohei 15), and in October he was granted Sakai Manor at Sumiyoshi Shrine. Emperor Gomurakami died here in March 1368 (Oan 1, Shohei 23). Emperor Chokei then also used this place as a temporary palace at first, but in December he returned to Yoshino from the Sumiyoshi temporary palace.
