Sijilmāsa (English spelling)

...Several oasis routes ran through the Sahara between the Mediterranean and the Black African world. These routes carried gold, slaves, ivory, and spices such as musk from the Sahara south, and salt, wool, paper, books, weapons, horses, and other goods from the north. This trans-Saharan trade was carried out by camel caravans, and some Saharan nomads made huge profits by transporting and guarding these goods, plundering them, or even organizing their own caravans.
