Gleyed soil is waterlogged soil in which there is a lack of oxygen and the soil becomes reducing. This is called gleying conditions [Robinson: 1936, Birkelend: 1974]. Glei, meadow soil, and wiesboden are all synonyms. Gleyed soil is a general term for intrazonal inorganic hydrogenetic soils that are widely distributed in poorly drained areas of humid climate regions, and has blue-gray to greenish-gray gleyed layers or gleyed spots in the cross section that are the result of the reduction of iron associated with freshwater. Soils are further classified according to the parts of the soil that are saturated with water and the cause of this saturation [Kimura et al.: 1973].
