Gley soil

Gleyed soil is waterlogged soil in which there is a lack of oxygen and the soil becomes reducing. This is called gleying conditions [Robinson: 1936, Birkelend: 1974]. Glei, meadow soil, and wiesboden are all synonyms. Gleyed soil is a general term for intrazonal inorganic hydrogenetic soils that are widely distributed in poorly drained areas of humid climate regions, and has blue-gray to greenish-gray gleyed layers or gleyed spots in the cross section that are the result of the reduction of iron associated with freshwater. Soils are further classified according to the parts of the soil that are saturated with water and the cause of this saturation [Kimura et al.: 1973].

水浸しの土壌で，この中では酸素が不足して還元条件となる．これをグライ条件（gleying condition）という．［Robinson : 1936, Birkelend : 1974］．glei, meadow soil, wiesbodenなどは同義．湿潤気候地域の排水不良地に広く分布する間帯性（intrazonal soil）の無機質水成土壌の総称で，断面内に淡水に伴う鉄の還元の結果生じる青灰色ないし緑灰色のグライ層またはグライ斑をもっている．土壌が水で飽和される部位やその原因によってさらに分類される［木村ほか : 1973］．
