...A general term for mammals belonging to the Otariidae family of the suborder Pinnipedia. In the narrow sense, sea lions refer collectively to the California sea lion Z alophus californianus californianus (illustration) and the Japanese sea lion Z. c . japonicus . Since the Japanese sea lion is already extinct, the California sea lion is often simply called sea lion.
