When it was introduced to the Latin world in the 12th century (the most famous was by Gerard of Cremona (c. 1114-87) in 1175), the title was still the Latin Almagestum. The system, which uses devices such as epicycles, eccentrics, and equants, is an extremely sophisticated mathematical model for describing celestial phenomena. …
