HH Jasper and his colleagues seated an unanesthetized monkey in a chair with a collar, and used a manipulator attached to its head to record neuronal activity from the cerebral cortex. They then used light as a conditioned stimulus, and formed a conditioned reflex in which the forearm was bent by an electric shock to the skin of the forearm as an unconditioned reflex, and recorded the neuronal activity of the cerebral cortex during this process (1958). It was found that the number of neuronal discharges in the cerebral motor cortex increased or decreased during this conditioned escape reflex. …
