EFEDouwes Dekker

1879‐1950
A leader of the Indonesian nationalist movement. He later changed his name to D. Setiabudi. A distant relative of colonial writer Murtatulli, he was born in the port city of Pasuruan in East Java to a Dutch father and a German-Javanese mother. After graduating from the Dutch High School in Batavia (now Jakarta), he served in the Boer War in South Africa and was a prisoner of war in Ceylon for two years before returning to Java in 1903. Around 1907, he aspired to form a political party, and supported the young people who founded Budi Utomo.

インドネシア民族主義運動の指導者。のちにスティアブディD.Setiabudiと改名。植民地文学者ムルタトゥーリの遠い親戚に当たり，東部ジャワの港市パスルアンにオランダ人を父とし，ドイツ人とジャワ人の混血児を母として生まれた。バタビア(現，ジャカルタ)のオランダ人高等学校を卒業した後，南アフリカのボーア戦争に従軍し，イギリスの捕虜としてセイロンの刑務所に2年服役し，1903年にジャワに帰った。07年ごろから政党結成を志し，ブディ･ウトモ設立に際しては青年たちを支援した。
