1879‐1950 A leader of the Indonesian nationalist movement. He later changed his name to D. Setiabudi. A distant relative of colonial writer Murtatulli, he was born in the port city of Pasuruan in East Java to a Dutch father and a German-Javanese mother. After graduating from the Dutch High School in Batavia (now Jakarta), he served in the Boer War in South Africa and was a prisoner of war in Ceylon for two years before returning to Java in 1903.
