A personal prayer book written for Christian laity. The Canon of Hours refers to prayers at set times each day. [Origin, Content] The Book of Hours was originally a collection of psalms, a personal prayer book used most commonly in the early Middle Ages, and was modeled after the breviary, a book of religious services for the clergy. The breviary was originally a collection of Bible, hymns, psalms, and prayers, but for various reasons it was compiled into a single book in the 12th century at the Monte Cassino Abbey and other monasteries. It quickly became popular throughout Europe. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
