The Book of Hours was originally a collection of psalms, a personal prayer book used most commonly in the early Middle Ages, and was modeled after the breviary, a book of religious services for the clergy. The breviary was originally a collection of Bible, hymns, psalms, and prayers, but for various reasons it was compiled into a single book in the 12th century at the Monte Cassino Abbey and other monasteries. It quickly became popular throughout Europe.

キリスト教の平信徒のために書かれた個人用祈禱書。時禱(正しくは時課)とは毎日の定時の祈禱をいう。
［起源，内容］
　時禱書の前身として，中世初期にもっとも一般的に使用された個人用祈禱書としての《詩篇》を重視する説と，聖職者用の聖務日課書(抄本)breviaryがその手本である，とする説がある。聖務日課書は，かつて聖書，賛歌，交誦，集禱文など数冊に分かれていたが，種々の便宜と目的のため12世紀にモンテ･カッシノ修道院などで1冊の抄本にまとめられ，以後急激にヨーロッパ各地に普及したものである。
