…Ancient gates were often simple in structure, but some, like the gate at the mortuary temple of Ramses III in the New Kingdom of Egypt (first half of the 12th century BC), had a curved passageway inside the gate, or had a square inside the gate with a second gate at the back, trapping enemies inside the square and allowing them to be shot from the surrounding walls. Good examples are the Dipylon in Athens and the gate at the Roman legion headquarters in Lambaese in North Africa (3rd century).
