A Rinzai sect monk from the Momoyama to early Edo period. Born in Kyoto. His pen name was Gyokumuro, his given name was Sohaku, and he went by the name Suiminshi. He succeeded Shun'oku Soen (1529-1611) and became a disciple of Takuan Soho and Kogetsu Sokan. At the age of 36, he became the 147th abbot of Daitokuji Temple, and was a devoted follower of Emperor Goyozei, who bestowed on him the title of Jikki Shingen Zenji. He later founded temples such as Daigen'an, Kobayashi'an, and Hoshun'in, but was exiled to Akadate in Oshu for three years due to the Shie Incident. His calligraphy and paintings are highly respected for their pure and refined spirit. His calligraphy in particular is reminiscent of Shishun'ya and shows a refined elegance.
