Keikoin Temple

Japanese:
Keikoin Temple

This nunnery was located in Uji Urata-cho, Watarai-gun, Ise Province (Ise City, Mie Prefecture) at the foot of Ise Shrine. It is a Rinzai sect temple without a main temple, founded at the end of the Muromachi period. Generations of the temple's founders lamented the decline of Ise Shrine and sought to restore it, and during the reign of the third emperor, Seijun (?-1566), Emperor Gonara bestowed the title of Shonin on the successive abbots and gave the name Keikoin to the temple where they lived, in recognition of their achievements. The abbot was a nun with imperial permission to wear purple robes, known as Ise Shonin or Sengu Shonin, and held more power than the shrine's priests, but in 1869 (Meiji 2) the temple was abandoned, and its site is now the residence of the priests and chief priests of Ise Shrine.

It is also known that Oman no Kata, the concubine of the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, entered the Edo Ooku through the services of the head priest of Keikoin Temple.
