A French neoclassical composer, he was also an outstanding pianist, organist, and writer. He was well-educated and composed in almost every genre of the time, with a clear and elegant style, but he was not able to produce truly original musical expressions and is described as eclectic. Together with R. Busine, Fauré, C. Franck, and others, he founded the Société National de Musica (1871), which contributed to giving young French composers a platform to have their works performed, but as a writer he took an anti-Wagner, anti-Impressionist stance.

フランスの新古典主義の作曲家で，卓越したピアノ奏者，オルガン奏者，著述家でもあった。幅広い教養を身につけ，明快で優雅な作風で当時のほぼすべてのジャンルを手がけたが，真に独創的な音楽表現を生み出すにはいたらず，折衷的とも評される。R.ビュシーヌ，フォーレ，C.フランクなどとともに国民音楽協会を設立(1871)，フランスの若手作曲家に作品演奏の場を与えることに貢献する一方，著述家としては反ワーグナー，反印象派の論陣を展開した。
