Civet (English spelling)
A general term for two genera and five species of terrestrial mammals in the family Viverridae, subfamily Viverrinae, order Carnivora, with relatively long limbs and a pointed snout. Distributed in the forests and grasslands of Africa and southern Asia. Body length 45-95 cm, tail length 30-48 cm, weight 2-20 kg, front and back feet with five toes, claws that can be partially retracted. The body has a yellowish-brown background with black stripes or spots, and a prominent black and white band across the underside of the neck. Species of the Viverra genus that have a mane-like hair on their backs that can stand on end include the African civet V. civetta (sub-Saharan Africa), the Indian civet V. zibetha (illustration) (from Nepal to southern China and Malaya), and the Malayan civet V. tangalunga (Malaya, Sumatra, Borneo, and the Philippines), while the little civet Viverricula indica (illustration) (distributed from India and Sri Lanka to southern China, and from Taiwan to Sumatra) has no mane.
