...A city in southern Saitama Prefecture. It straddles the Musashino Plateau and the Iruma Plateau, separated by the northwest-flowing Iruma River. Population 162,240 (1995). In 1954, Irumagawacho and the five villages of Iruma, Horikane, Okutomi, Kashiwara, and Mizutomi were merged to form a city. Irumagawa, located in the center of the city, was established as a settlement where the Kamakura Highway crossed the Iruma River, and in the Edo period, 2 and 7 six towns were established. The water-poor characteristics of the Musashino Plateau are well reflected in the place name Nigemizu and the remains of Horikane Well and Nanamagari Well.
