The Significance of the Frontier in American History

…He taught American history at the University of Wisconsin (1891-1910) and Harvard University (1910-24), and was a research associate at the Huntington Library in California from 1927 until his death. In 1893, he published “The Significance of the Frontier in American History,” and his subsequent series of essays were compiled as “Frontier Theory.” In this work, he changed the way of looking at American history from the institutional history, constitutional history, and eastern-centered perspective that was mainstream at the time to one that emphasized the frontier and western environments. At the same time, he emphasized the need to look at American history from the perspective of conflicts, rivalries, alliances, and coalitions between many sections. …
