A small, grass-like evergreen shrub of the family Prunaceae, densely packed together to form a carpet. It is widely distributed in high mountains in the Northern Hemisphere, and in Japan it grows on rocky ground in the alpine zone from central Honshu northward. It produces white flowers similar to those of plum trees in July. It has five petals, but the base is shallowly bell-shaped. イワウメ科の小型草状の常緑低木で,多数密に集ってカーペット状になる。北半球の高山に広く分布し,日本では本州中部以北の高山帯の岩石地に生える。7月頃,ウメに似た白い花をつける。5弁であるが基部は浅い鐘状をなす。
