Umaji [village] - Umaji

Japanese: 馬路[村] - うまじ

A village in Aki District, eastern Kochi Prefecture. Population 1,242 (1995). It borders Aki City to the west and Tokushima Prefecture to the north. It consists of the Umaji district in the upper reaches of the Yasuda River and the Yanase district in the upper reaches of the Nahari River. It is a mountainous region with mountains over 1,000 meters above sea level, and with a warm, rainy climate, it is rich in forest resources and has long been known as a producer of cedar. In particular, the Senbonyama Protected Forest in Yanase is counted as one of Japan's three most beautiful forests. Industry is centered on business in the national forests, which take up the majority of the total area, and forestry-related work accounts for a large proportion of the employed population.

高知県東部，安芸郡の村。人口1242(1995)。西は安芸市，北は徳島県に接する。安田川上流域の馬路地区と奈半利川上流域の魚梁瀬（やなせ）地区よりなる。標高1000m以上の山々が重なりあう山岳地帯で，温暖多雨の気候によって，森林資源に富み，古くから杉の産地として知られ，特に魚梁瀬の千本山保護林は日本三大美林の一つに数えられる。産業は総面積の大半を占める国有林の事業が中心で，就業人口に占める林業関係の割合が多い。
