Ara (English spelling) Niphon spinosus

Japanese: アラ（英語表記）Niphon spinosus

A marine fish of the Perciformes order, Percidae family (illustration). It is distributed from Hokkaido to the Philippines. It is called by many different names depending on the region, such as ara in many areas, hota in Kansai, ikakake in various parts of the Chugoku region, and sukesou in Nagasaki and Kumamoto. Its body is slender and similar to that of a sea bass (illustration), but its body color is brown on the back and white on the belly. It has two dorsal fins, a long and pointed snout, and villiform teeth without canine teeth. Adult fish live in slightly deep rocky areas along the coast, but juveniles can also be found on sandy and muddy bottoms, and have three distinct brown vertical stripes on their sides.

スズキ目スズキ科の海産魚（イラスト）。北海道からフィリピンまで分布する。多くの地方でアラ，関西でホタ，中国地方の各地でイカケ，長崎･熊本でスケソウなど地方により多くの呼名がある。体型は細長くスズキ（イラスト）に似るが，体色は背部は茶褐色で腹部は白色である。背びれは2基で，吻（ふん）は長くてとがり，歯は絨毛状で犬歯状の歯がない。成魚は沿岸のやや深い岩礁域にすむが，幼魚は砂泥底からも得られ，体側に3本の明りょうな褐色縦帯がある。
