〘Noun〙 (also "kingishoga") Koto, Go, calligraphy, and painting. Long ago in China, these were called the four arts, and were revered as the leisure pursuits of nobles and gentlemen. They were popular subjects for paintings, and in Japan they are often depicted on sliding doors and folding screens. They refer to elegant pastimes. *Koetsu Honyokyoku Zenchicho ( around 1465): "I was not born into a family of samurai, farmers, artisans, or merchants, nor was I one who enjoyed the art of koto, go, calligraphy, or painting."
