Japanese: ヒラタグモ(扁蜘蛛) - ヒラタグモ（英語表記）Uroctea compactilis

An arachnid of the family Pycnonotidae in the order Araneae (illustration). Found throughout Japan and neighboring countries. A flat spider with a body length of 8-10 mm. The anterior body and ambulatory legs are orange-red, the posterior body is white with a distinctive large black spot in the center, and the lateral edges and ventral surface are also black, but young nymphs do not have these black spots, which appear as they grow. They make their homes in the crevices of bark or rocks, or in the corners of walls inside and outside houses. The home consists of two membranes spun from silk, the upper membrane is often covered with food scraps and garbage, and the lower membrane has a dozen or so tentacles attached that radiate out from the home.

クモ目ヒラタグモ科の蛛形（ちゆけい）類（イラスト）。日本全国および近隣諸国に分布する。扁平なクモで体長8～10mm。前体部および歩脚は橙赤色，後体部は白色で中央に独特な黒色の大きな斑紋があり，側縁から腹面にかけても黒色となるが，若齢若虫にはこの黒色斑紋がなく成長するにつれて現れる。樹皮や岩の割れ目，人家内外の壁の隅などに住居をつくる。住居は糸で紡がれた2枚の膜からなり，上の膜には食べかすやごみなどがしばしばつけられ，下の膜には住居から放射状に出る十数本の触糸が付着している。
