An annual grass of the Gramineae family, the inflorescence of which is used as a dried flower by drying it. It has a thin stem about 20 cm tall that branches at the bottom. The leaves, along with the stem and leaf sheaths, are hairy, narrow lanceolate, 8 cm long and just under 1 cm wide. Towards summer, the top of the stem produces an oval-shaped inflorescence 2-4 cm long, covered in whitish hairs and brown awns. Because this inflorescence closely resembles the tail of a hare, the genus name was given to this plant, which is the Greek word for "tail of the hare, lagos," and both the English and Japanese names are direct translations of this.
