Japanese: ヒラタアブ(平虻) - ヒラタアブ

This is the general name for insects that appear to have flat bodies and belong to the family Syrphidae in the order Diptera, but most belong to the subfamily Polymorpha (illustration). Polymorpha flies are so named because their larvae prey on aphids, but the species of aphids that the larvae prey on are not fixed; at least 4-5 species, but usually around 10. At most, they prey on 20-30 species of aphids. Adults lay eggs on the leaves and stems of plants where aphids are present.

双翅目ショクガバエ(ハナアブ)科に属する昆虫のうち，体が平たく見えるものの一般名であるが，ほとんどがショクガバエ亜科に含まれる（イラスト）。ショクガバエは幼虫がアブラムシ(蚜)を捕食するのでこの名があるが，幼虫の捕食するアブラムシの種は定まっておらず，少ないもので4～5種，ふつう約10種くらいである。多い種で20～30種のアブラムシを捕食する。成虫は，アブラムシの発生している植物の葉や茎に産卵する。
