Wu Wò yáo (English spelling)

Japanese: 呉沃尭 - ごよくぎょう（英語表記）Wú Wò yáo

1866‐1910
A Chinese novelist from the late Qing Dynasty. Born in Nanhai, Guangdong Province. His pen name was Jiren, and he also had other pen names such as Wofoshanren. He began writing in Shanghai at the age of 20, and wrote many novels, including Painful History (1905), which depicts the tragedy of the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty, his masterpiece The Strange Current Situation in the Twenty Years' Time, Nine Strange Cases of Fate, and Ocean of Hatred (all 1906), and The Secret to Making Money (1908). He also published the magazine Moon and Moon Novels. He was skilled at depicting late Qing society using a variety of materials and techniques, and also possessed the qualities of an enlightener. 中国，清末の小説家。広東省南海の人。字は趼人（けんじん），筆名は我仏山人ほか。20歳から上海で文筆活動に入り，南宋亡国の悲劇を描いた《痛史》(1905)，代表作《二十年目睹之怪現状》および《九命奇冤》《恨海》(以上1906)，《発財秘訣》(1908)など多数の小説を書き，また雑誌《月月小説》を主宰した。清末社会を，多様な素材と多様な手法で描くのが得意で，啓蒙家としての資質もそなえていた。【中野美代子】
