It belongs to the phylum Annelida, class Hirudinae, order Jaws, family Hirudinidae. It lives in rice fields, ponds, and swamps, hiding in the mud in winter. Its body is flat, 10-15 cm long and about 2 cm wide. Its dorsum is olive-colored with five dark vertical lines. Its ventral surface is pale with small dark spots arranged vertically. The front sucker is very small, with its mouth at the bottom. Its mouth has three jaws, but it does not cut human skin to suck blood. The posterior sucker is large and circular. There are five rings per segment in the center of the body. There are five pairs of eyes, located on the second, third, fourth, sixth, and ninth rings. It is hermaphroditic, with male and female genital openings opening on the eleventh and twelfth segments. The lateral blind pouch of the stomach is small. It is widely distributed throughout Japan. The Japanese name "Uma" means large.

環形動物門ヒル綱顎(あご)ビル目ヒルド科に属する動物。水田、池、沼などにすみ、冬は泥の中に隠れる。体は扁平(へんぺい)で、長さ10～15センチメートル、幅2センチメートル内外。背面はオリーブ色で5本の暗色の縦線がある。腹面は淡色で小さい暗色の斑点(はんてん)が縦に並ぶ。前吸盤は非常に小さく、その底に口がある。口には3個のあごがあるが、ヒトの皮膚に傷をつけて吸血することはない。後吸盤は円形で大きい。体中央部では1体節に5体環ある。目は5対あり、第2、3、4、6、9体環上にある。雌雄同体で、雌雄生殖口は第11と第12体節に開く。胃の側盲嚢(そくもうのう)は小さい。日本各地に広く分布する。なお、和名の「ウマ」は大形の意味である。
