A monastery in the northern suburbs of Paris. It was founded around the tomb of Denis (also known as Dionysius the Areopagite, a disciple of the Apostle Paul), who was martyred at Montmartre in 273 and walked about 10km carrying his own head, at the spot where he collapsed. A monastery was first built by Saint Genevieve (late 5th century) in response to the cult that had formed around the tomb, and then King Dagobert rebuilt the church (early 7th century). The church was further remodeled at the end of the 8th century, and again by Abbot Suger (c. 1080-1151), and then again in the 13th century by Pierre de Montreuil (c. 1200-66) at the command of King Louis IX.
