Cosenza (English spelling)

Japanese: コゼンツァ(英語表記)Cosenza
Cosenza (English spelling)
The capital of the province of Cosenza in Calabria, southern Italy. It was the capital of the Brucci people until it was taken by the Romans in 204 BC. Formerly called Consentia, it was the homeland of Hannibal and Alaric I of the Visigothic Kingdom (who died here in 410). It was subsequently under the rule of the Byzantines, Saracen, and Spanish, and briefly became a republic in 1799 during Napoleon's invasion. During the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, it became a base for the Italian independence movement, and the unfortunate battle of the Bandiera brothers in 1844 is famous. It is a processing center for grains, wine, olive oil, and fruit. Furniture, wool, and tannic acid are also manufactured here. The old town, with its many historic buildings such as the Romanesque cathedral (1185) and the Basilica of St. Domenico (13th century), which tell of its ancient history, overlooks the modern new town. Population: 87,140 (1991 estimate).
